Kiln Dried Firewood

What is kiln dried firewood?

Kiln dried firewood is the ultimate wood fuel.

It provides the maximum heat output and the cleanest burn, making it the best fuel for everything from wood burning stoves and wood fired pizza ovens to your open fire.

Kiln dried to contain less than 20% moisture, our firewood burns hotter and for longer than seasoned firewood.

What types of wood are available?

We offer Ash, Birch, or Oak logs. Ash, birch and oak are all hardwoods. As opposed to softwood, hardwoods have a greater density and will therefore burn for longer, and at a higher temperature.

What are kiln dried logs suitable for?

Our kiln dried wood is perfect firewood for using in wood burning stoves, pizza ovens, BBQs, open fires, and chimineas.

How does the process work?

Processed and seasoned high-quality logs are stacked tightly in crates and then placed in kilns that use waste heat to provide heat for drying. The excess moisture content in the wood evaporates, leaving us with kiln dried firewood logs that burn cleaner and at a high heat.

What are the benefits of kiln dried logs?

It’s a great feeling to face a long cold winter with a big pile of logs stashed away ready to keep you warm during the dark nights.

But did you know that your kiln-dried firewood offers great value for money too? You’ll get more efficient burning, and so you won’t have to throw as much wood on the fire. This is not only great for your pocket but also your carbon footprint!

Sustainable warmth

We’re proud that our logs can help people fuel their open fires and wood burning stoves in a more sustainable way.

Through improving the efficiency of the burn during the kiln drying process, we are minimising the amount of wood you will need to burn – whilst maximising the comfort only a real fire can bring!

All our firewood kiln dried logs are sourced from sustainably managed forestry, meaning you can put your feet up by the fire knowing the environment is being cared for too.

A clean burn

The reduction in moisture content leads to a much cleaner burn with kiln dried logs. Less moisture in the wood leads to better combustion. This results in more heat, less smoke, less soot and less ash. Kiln dried logs are the ultimate clean, dry, dust free fuel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which type of log should I choose?

Kiln oak dried hardwood is sustainably sourced from managed woodlands and has a low moisture content of less than 20%. Oak firewood burns hotter and longer than any of the other hardwood species. With this in mind, it is perfect for those who intensively use their stove or burn through logs quickly.

However, very dense kiln-dried hardwoods, like oak, may require a little more effort to get them going. Once they start to burn, that’s it – but if you want something that starts the fire more quickly, you might prefer our ash or birch logs.

Oak will take longer to light and burn, but once it’s going, it will need little tending to.

What’s the best way to start my fire?

Lay your fire by gathering kindling and creating a small pyramid shape with some smaller sticks. Air should be able to flow through freely. Use newspaper or even tissue – something that will catch light very easily – for your initial layers, then use the small twigs to give more structure.

Once you light this, you should be able to introduce a smaller log and get it going. You should use smaller pieces of wood to start off your fire and only once your stove is burning introduce larger pieces.

How big are the logs in Spillane deliveries?

Our high-quality logs are typically 25-30cm in length. We also sell kiln dried kindling if you need smaller pieces of wood to get your fire started.

How much wood do I need?

A 1 m cubed crate will provide 70 days of heating on a 5 KW wood burning stove (half a winter’s heat for a typical household!!).

I’ve seen cheaper logs for sale – why buy kiln dried logs?

Kiln dried logs are special. They burn so much better, hotter, longer, and cleaner than standard logs that they will save you money – because you need to burn far fewer of them, but also because they are safer.

Standard logs have a much higher moisture content.

Burning logs that are too wet produces a heavy smoke that condenses onto the cooler sides of the flue or chimney.

This causes tar and acidic residues to build up, a major cause of chimney fires. These compounds also cause damage to the stove and flue.

How sustainable are Spillane kiln dried logs?

Using wood waste, our high quality kiln dried logs are sourced from sustainably managed forestry. Our process means they burn hotter, for longer, so you need fewer logs. This all means our kiln dried logs are a great sustainable heating solution.
